FGM-header

It is estimated that 137,000 women and girls have been affected by FGM in England and Wales. The vast majority of these victims will have been subjected to this horrific form of abuse either before they came to the UK or they will have been taken, as children, to their parents’ country of origin to undergo this abuse.

How do I identify a potential victim?

● If a mother is a victim of FGM it markedly increases the chance that her daughters will be victims.

● Victims are aged 0 – 18 but most commonly 4 – 13 years old.

Summer holidays are the most common time for this kind of abuse. If a child is withdrawn before the summer holiday this may be a sign of risk.
