Ballet West School Closes with Immediate Effect Following Sexual Abuse Allegations
- We brought you news yesterday that the prestigious Ballet West school in Scotland had launched an investigation into sexual abuse in the school
- The former principal has been subject to claims of abuse as far back as 2004 and as recently as 2018
- It has since been alleged that exam regulator the Royal Academy of Dance were made aware of an allegation as far back as 2012, according to a whistleblower
- An official liquidator has now been appointed
- Pupils have been urged by the school to report any complaints to Police Scotland or any relevant body
Physical Abuse of Older Children Soared During Lockdown
- The NSPCC has reported that reports of physical abuse rose by 53%, during the lockdown
- The NSPCC helpline received an average of 1,066 contacts related to physical abuse between April and July – compared to the monthly average of 696 pre-lockdown
- Police records show that four times as many adolescents are physically abused compared to younger children in England
- Peter Wanless, NSPCC Chief Executive said: “As pupils return to education, we need to be prepared to make sure schools and teachers, children’s social care and other safeguarding partners are ready to support every young person who has suffered during lockdown.”
Former Headmaster Admits Sexual Abuse in Thailand and Aberdeen
- Former headmaster, Arthur Hutchinson, 74 has admitted subjecting a girl to sexual exploitation and abuse which started when she was 8-years-old
- The abuse began in Thailand, where the defendant lived for 2 years, and continued when the victim was moved to Scotland to pursue education
- The High Court in Edinburgh heard that the victim was afraid Hutchinson would withdraw financial support from her and her family if she resisted
- The abuse was discovered after the victim spoke to a counsellor
- After police arrested Hutchinson, images and videos of the abuse were discovered on his laptop
- Sentencing has been deferred pending a report and risk assessment by the presiding Judge Lord Fairley
Concerns of Unsolicited Messages on Scrabble Go App
- A number of women who play Scrabble Go have reported receiving messages from ‘creepy men’
- The messages were received in the chat function of the app, after scammers ask ed the women to continue conversations on other platforms including WhatsApp
- Australia’s Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said it had received two reports of romance scams in the first three months since the app launched in March this year.
- Game owner, Scopely said that users can restrict the chat function to ‘friends only’ and urged users to report incidents to the them
Instagram Reviews Nudity Policy after Censorship Claims
- Instagram has agreed to review its semi-nudity policy after a campaign by black plus-size influencer Nyonme Nicholas-Williams
- A topless photo of the influencer depicting her sitting on a chair, wearing cycling shorts and covering her breasts was taken down for violating the platform’s nudity guidelines
- The influencer cited the unfair application of the rule noting examples of the ‘Playboy’ Instagram account with similar images of ‘slim white women’, which were not removed
