Nurseries sent first official cyber-attack warning 

      • Nurseries and childminders are being warned of the threat of cyber-attacks, in guidance from the government’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) 
      • It is the first time that the agency – part of the GCHQ intelligence service – has given guidance to a sector caring for such young children 
      • It includes warnings to use password protection for information for parents 
      • “We know that incidents affecting the education sector are increasingly common,” said Sarah Lyons at the NCSC

        Tinder to introduce background checks 

          • One of the world’s most popular dating apps is adding a background check feature to its platform in the US 
          • Later this year, Tinder will allow users to view public records information of perspective dates using their name or mobile number 
          • The move comes as user safety for digital dating has come under scrutiny 
          • Match Group, Tinder’s parent company, plans to include the feature across all of its platforms at a later date

          Everyone’s Invited: Children recount ‘rape culture’ experiences 

          • An online campaign inviting users to post anonymous testimonies of sexual assault and harassment has been growing in popularity 
          • The collection of more than 4,100 testimonies includes accounts from girls aged as young as nine, which have been published on Everyone’s Invited website and its Instagram account 
          • The youngsters have written personal accounts of “rape culture”, identifying the school or university the alleged perpetrators attended
          • Experiences recounted range from being drugged and raped at parties to explicit images being shared over messaging platforms

            New Children’s Commissioner for England pledges to ‘rebuild‘ childhood 

              • The new Children’s Commissioner for England wants to “rebuild childhood” after the disruption of the pandemic 
              • Dame Rachel de Souza says the scale of the challenge is like reconstructing the social security system in the wake of World War Two 
              • She also wants short-term measures – such as free school meals – being extended into the summer holidays, and not “dropping” Universal Credit levels
              • The new Children’s Commissioner is launching what is claimed to be England’s biggest survey of children – the “Big Ask” – which will gather children’s views on the impact of the pandemic, and what they think are the barriers to children’s ambitions

                Man jailed after teachers discover he was sexually abusing a child 

                  • A man aged 64, was found guilty of two counts of attempted rape and two counts of sexual assault, after a trial at Sheffield Crown Court
                  • The offences happened when the victim was only 11, continuing until she turned 13 
                  • Police found out about the crimes when her schoolteachers heard about what was happening after the victim confided in a close friend 
                  • The offender will serve 14 years in jail and be subject to sex offender registration conditions for life 
                  • Judge Sarah Wright, sentencing, said: “The evidence of the victim was utterly compelling. You had no thought or concern for her feelings and the effect on the girl caused catastrophic, immeasurable harm”
